New Sand school for an equestrian estate, Newdigate, Surrey

The construction of a new sand school or riding arena is a significant investment for any equestrian centre. This is because high-quality materials and the right drainage system are needed to achieve a really effective, durable and all-weather riding surface.

This standard 40 metre x 20 metre sand school site first required substantial excavation and relevelling. We then installed land drains across the whole width of the school. Getting the drainage and base right is essential to prevent puddling and riding deep.

We laid the surface with 200m reject stone, which was then compacted so that ground was stable and firm. This was topped with 200mm of the fine equestrian silica sand our client had selected.

The result is a consistent and safe sand school or riding arena surface for the ongoing health and performance of riders and horses.
